Cancer Council, state wide but close to home.
Cancer Council is state-wide organisation operating at a local level across 10 regions in NSW. The western region team (Lithgow to Broken Hill) operates from Orange. Our staff live and work in Orange (and Cudal) and work with individuals and communities across western NSW
We are an independent and forward-thinking community of people, where ideas and charity come together to make a difference in the fight against all cancers.
What do we do?
We are the trusted independent voice on all cancers for all people, investing funds to find answers, dispel myths and guide local communities on what they can do to prevent, treat, and manage cancer.
Cancer Council NSW connects people and organisations to the cancer cause. Together we build insights into the significance of cancer in our lives and contribute our talents towards the vision of cancer defeated. The impact of our work together will be visible in changing:
•· The lives of local cancer patients and their carers
•· Scientific knowledge
•· Community understanding and behaviour
•· Society, policy and practice to advance cancer control.
How do we do this?
Through connection with regional communities, experts, academics, organisations, and global networks; and contribution from local people to our services, support and community activities, research, prevention and advocacy programs.
What does this mean?
We're teaching local people about the simple steps they can take to affect their own cancer outcomes, we're supporting local cancer patients and their families with timely, accurate and relevant access to support services and resources;, helping fund state and national research that will benefit local cancer patients and their families now and for future generations and; fund Cancer Council Helpline 13 11 20 (local call).
Where does the money go?
•· $14.3 million into cancer research - 5% or approximately $648 000 invested to directly benefit western NSW residents.
•· More than 16,500 people across NSW phone the Cancer Council Helpline (13 11 20) each year to receive free, confidential information and support from cancer health professionals. 602 of these callers were from the western region. The more local people that remember and refer to the Cancer Council Helpline the more local people will be helped and answer to their questions about cancer - no matter where you live, the issues you are facing or the questions you have, Cancer Council Helpline is an important local first port of call.
•· Each year we provide about $470,000 in financial assistance grants to patients; subside more than 20,000 nights of patient accommodation; and fund more than 967,000 kms of patient transport. 124 recipients of these grants were for local people facing real hardships.
•· A commitment of $500 000 grant to Cancer Care West to provide accommodation to cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy at Orange Base Hospital. The local economy benefits from the building works and ongoing support of the lodge, its staff and guests into the future.
A donation of $5 can help the Cancer Council give newly diagnosed cancer patients printed information & resources to help them through their cancer journey while $500 can help fund research into the causes of cancer and into new and improved treatments. Every dollar counts.
An estimated 114,000 new cases of cancer were diagnosed in Australia (1600 people in Western NSW) in 2010 that means there are 114,000 reasons to get involved with us...
Together we can beat cancer.
